Whitby in the Mist is a restrained black and white panoramic photograph made on the North Yorkshire coast during winter 2021. Taken in December, the image looks across Whitby harbour as dense mist softens the town and cliffs beyond, reducing the scene to structure, tone and atmosphere. The two harbour piers extend calmly into the frame, their repeating geometry guiding the eye through still water towards the distant lighthouse, partially veiled by fog.

Whitby’s twin piers were built to protect the harbour from the full force of the North Sea, and their long, linear forms have become one of the town’s most recognisable maritime features. They now stand as enduring examples of Victorian coastal engineering, their geometry lending itself naturally to panoramic photography.
