Arctic mountain reflection print from Scoresby Sund, Greenland

A sharply defined mountain rises from the cold, still Arctic water, its upper face lit by the first light of day while the lower slopes remain in shadow. The reflection sits almost undisturbed beneath it, forming a near-symmetrical composition across the frame. The colour contrast is direct and natural with deep blues in the sky and water set against the warm, low-angle sunlight striking the rock. With minimal surface movement, the scene is held in balance, allowing the structure of the landscape and its reflection to carry the image.

Photographed by Richard Burdon, Sunrise at Bear Island was captured within the Scoresby Sund fjord system in East Greenland – one of the largest and most remote fjord networks in the world. The location, also known as Kangertittivaq, is characterised by steep mountain formations, cold, clear water, and minimal human presence. The early September light sits low on the horizon, briefly illuminating the rock face while leaving the surrounding terrain subdued. The calm conditions allow for a clear reflection, reinforcing the vertical structure of the mountain and the scale of the natural landscape.
