Dawn Light on Ullswater is a photographic landscape print of Ullswater in the Lake District, photographed as the first warm light reaches the surrounding fells. Snow remains on the higher ground while softer autumn colour runs through the lower slopes and woodland. Across the lake, orange and gold from the breaking sky are reflected in the still water, contrasting with the cooler blues of the mountains and early morning. The curving shoreline in the foreground gives the composition its shape, leading from the textured shingle beach towards the open water and distant valley.
Photographed on location by Janet Burdon, this Ullswater print records one of the Lake District’s most recognisable landscapes during the brief transition from night into morning.
The composition is built around several distinct layers. The shingle shoreline sweeps into the frame from the right, providing a strong foreground before giving way to the broad, reflective surface of Ullswater. Beyond it, wooded lower slopes rise towards snow-dusted fells, with the opening between the mountains naturally drawing the eye towards the centre of the photograph.
Light is particularly important here. Rather than illuminating the entire landscape evenly, the rising sun catches the clouds and water first. This creates a band of warm reflected colour through the middle of an otherwise cooler scene. The contrast is subtle rather than dramatic, retaining detail in the darker hills and allowing the changing conditions of a Lake District dawn to remain the main subject.
As Ullswater photography, the image is as much about season and timing as location. The traces of snow, autumnal woodland and early light place the photograph at a very particular moment, while the still water allows the landscape and sky to be repeated in softened reflection.
For those drawn to Lake District wall art, it offers a recognisable view without treating the landscape as a postcard. Janet’s careful use of foreground, natural light and depth gives the photograph a strong sense of place while retaining the observational quality of fine art landscape photography.
Every Fotoviva artwork is made to order by a professional print team using 12-colour Giclée printing and archival inks, chosen to reproduce the fine tonal and colour differences found in the original photograph.
A Ullswater framed print offers the most traditional presentation. The photograph is printed on premium Enhanced Matte Art paper and presented with a precision-cut inner mount within a sustainably sourced wooden frame. The mount gives the landscape space around the image and works particularly well with the broad areas of water and sky in this composition.
The canvas version is printed on substantial 390gsm polycotton canvas and hand-stretched over 38mm kiln-dried FSC pine stretcher bars. Its lightly textured, less reflective surface gives the water and distant fells a slightly softer interpretation, while retaining detail through the shoreline and woodland.
For a cleaner contemporary finish, the acrylic version uses a Giclée print mounted beneath 10mm high-gloss acrylic. Diamond-polished edges and a concealed subframe create a floating-style presentation with no visible front fixings. Acrylic increases perceived contrast and depth, making it particularly effective for the reflected dawn colours and fine detail within this Lake District photography print.

The horizontal composition works naturally above longer pieces of furniture, including a sofa, sideboard or dining table. In a living room or dining room, the combination of earthy autumn colour, cooler mountain tones and open water can sit comfortably alongside natural wood, stone and neutral furnishings.
It is also well suited to a bedroom or office where a landscape with greater visual depth can work particularly effectively. Contemporary, Scandinavian, rustic and country interiors are all natural settings for this style of Lake District wall art, particularly where the room already uses subdued blues, warm neutrals or natural materials.
Displayed alongside other Lake District prints, the photograph can also form part of a collection documenting different locations, seasons and weather conditions across Lakeland.
This is genuine photographic art by Janet Burdon, created from a real landscape photographed on location at Ullswater in the Lake District. The mountains, shoreline, water and changing dawn light are the subject of Janet’s original photography rather than a digitally constructed scene, illustration or AI-generated image.
Our team of photographers earn money from every sale, helping them continue travelling, observing and photographing the landscapes represented throughout the Fotoviva collection.
