Simply Stitchwort delights us in spring with its lovely white petals that cover the hedgerows and woodlands across Britain and Ireland. Star-of-Bethlehem’ and ‘Wedding Cakes’ are just some of the other names for the Greater Stitchwort flower that can grow up to 50cms in height. One of its local names is “popguns” as its seeds fire off noisily when ripe. Other names such as ‘Poor Man’s Buttonhole’ and ‘Daddy’s Shirt Buttons’ suggest it was once used as a buttonhole.
The name ‘Stitchwort’ itself comes from the once-held belief it cured side-stitch caused by exercise.
