10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Photography

We all take photographs. In fact, most of us take more pictures in a week than our grandparents took in a lifetime. We pull out our phones, tap a button and capture images without giving it a second thought.

Yet behind every photograph lies an extraordinary story. From ancient philosophers experimenting with darkened rooms to early photographers risking explosions just to create enough light, the journey from the earliest camera obscuras to today’s AI-powered smartphones has been anything but ordinary.

Whether you’ve been taking photographs for decades or simply enjoy scrolling through your camera roll, there’s a good chance at least a few of these facts will surprise you. Here are ten things you probably didn’t know about photography.

1. Cameras existed for over 2,000 years before anyone took a photograph

This sounds impossible, but it’s true.

The basic idea behind a camera – a dark box with a tiny hole that projects an image onto a surface – was understood by ancient philosophers more than two thousand years ago. It became known as the camera obscura, which literally means “dark chamber”.

The problem was that nobody could work out how to preserve the image. It simply disappeared as soon as the light was blocked.

It wasn’t until 1826 that French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce created the world’s oldest surviving permanent photograph. In other words, people understood cameras for centuries before they discovered photography itself.

2. Every digital camera is actually colour-blind

Your expensive digital camera can’t actually see colour.

The camera’s sensor only measures how much light reaches each tiny pixel. The reds, greens and blues that you see in the finished image are reconstructed afterwards using coloured filters and sophisticated software.

So every digital photograph you’ve ever taken has already been through a surprising amount of clever processing before you even open it.

3.Early camera flashes were basically controlled explosions

If you think modern flash photography is a bit harsh, spare a thought for photographers in the early 1900s.

Many used flash powder made from finely ground metals mixed with a powerful oxidiser. When ignited, it produced an incredibly bright burst of light… and sometimes a rather larger explosion than intended.

Accidents were common. Equipment was damaged, photographers suffered burns and, on occasion, entire studios caught fire.

Today’s electronic flash suddenly seems rather civilised and user-friendly.

4. Your phone often creates photographs that never actually existed

Most people assume pressing the shutter captures a single instant. Modern smartphones and digital cameras do something very different.

Many take several photographs in rapid succession, combining different exposures, reducing noise, brightening shadows, sharpening details and balancing colours before producing the final image.

Some can even remove unwanted people, simulate blurred backgrounds or replace the sky. The photograph you see is often the result of dozens of computer calculations rather than one single exposure like it was in the old days of film.

5. A long-exposure photograph doesn’t freeze time – it collects it

When you see silky waterfalls, smooth seas or star trails stretching across the night sky, you’re not looking at a single moment.

You’re looking at seconds, minutes or sometimes hours compressed into one photograph.

Every wave, every passing cloud and every moving star has contributed a tiny part to the final image.

It’s less like stopping time and more like collecting it.

6.Most cameras can see light that’s invisible to us

Human eyes can only detect a small part of the light spectrum.

Digital camera sensors, however, are naturally sensitive to infrared light as well.

Manufacturers actually have to fit an infrared-blocking filter in front of the sensor because otherwise your everyday photos would contain light we simply can’t see. Remove that filter and trees suddenly glow white while blue skies become almost black!

7. The first selfie is nearly 200 years old

The selfie wasn’t invented by smartphones.

In 1839, American photographer Robert Cornelius set up his camera, removed the lens cap, ran into position and sat still for around a minute before replacing the cap.

It’s widely regarded as the first photographic self-portrait.

8. There are cameras on the Moon

When the Apollo astronauts returned from the Moon, they faced an unusual problem. Moon rocks were heavy.

To make space for them, several Hasselblad cameras were left behind on the lunar surface.

So, unless someone fancies a very expensive retrieval mission, there are still cameras sitting on the Moon more than fifty years later. Watch the Hasselblad video for more details.

9. The first digital camera took 23 seconds to save one photograph

In 1975, an engineer at Kodak built the world’s first working digital camera.

It weighed around 3.6 kg, captured a tiny black and white image measuring just 0.01 megapixels and took around 23 seconds to record a single photograph onto a cassette tape.

Today, your phone can capture hundreds of images in that time while automatically editing, organising and backing them up.

10.A photograph isn’t really finished until it’s printed

Photographs spend most of their lives trapped inside phones, hard drives and cloud storage. Printing changes the experience completely.

A large print reveals textures, tiny details and subtle tonal changes that often disappear on a small screen. It also slows us down.

Instead of flicking past an image in a fraction of a second, we spend time looking at it on a wall, like a piece of art.

Perhaps that’s why printed photographs still have a presence that digital images struggle to match.

Photography is one of those inventions we rarely stop to think about. We point a camera, tap a button and instantly preserve a moment that might otherwise have been forgotten forever.

Yet behind every photograph is a fascinating mix of physics, chemistry, engineering, art and, increasingly, computer science. From ancient camera obscuras to digital sensors that can’t actually see colour, it’s a story that’s still evolving.

The next time you take a photograph, remember there’s a good chance you’re using technology that would have seemed like science fiction just a generation ago. And if one of those images eventually earns a place on your wall rather than remaining in your camera roll, you’ve become part of a tradition that’s almost two centuries old.
