What makes acrylic wall art different?

Acrylic changes the way a photographic print is seen. Unlike a standard glass frame, the image is bonded behind a clear acrylic surface, allowing light to pass through the panel before reaching the print. This gives the artwork a sense of depth and definition, with colours appearing clean and blacks holding strong contrast.

The effect is especially noticeable in photography with water, sky, architectural lines or rich tonal detail. A coastal image can feel clearer and more open; a black and white print can gain extra separation between shadow and highlight; a floral or abstract image can carry more surface presence without needing a traditional frame.

Acrylic is not the quietest print finish we offer, but it is one of the most precise. It suits rooms where the artwork is intended to feel sharp, modern and visually defined.

How our acrylic prints are made

Our acrylic prints are produced using a professional photographic process rather than being printed directly onto the acrylic surface. The image is first printed onto high-quality photographic paper, then reverse-mounted behind a 10mm acrylic sheet using an optically clear bonding method.

This process helps preserve sharpness, tonal range and colour depth while protecting the print behind the acrylic panel. The edges are diamond polished for a clean, finished profile, and each piece is supplied with a hidden floating subframe so the artwork sits slightly away from the wall.

The result is a frameless acrylic wall print with a clear front surface, polished edges and no visible fixings on the face of the artwork.

Acrylic, canvas or framed prints?

Acrylic is the most contemporary of our three main print finishes. It has a high-gloss surface, a clean floating profile and a sharper visual character than canvas. It is well suited to modern interiors, open-plan rooms, kitchens, hallways, offices and spaces where natural or directional light can pick up the surface of the print.

Canvas art prints have a softer, more textured appearance. It can work well where you want a more relaxed gallery-style finish without reflections from a glossy surface.

Framed prints offer a more classic presentation, with the artwork printed on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Art paper and supplied framed, mounted and ready to hang. This is often the best choice for rooms where a traditional framed picture feels more appropriate.

Choosing between the three formats is partly practical and partly visual. Acrylic gives the cleanest and most architectural finish; canvas feels softer and more tactile; framed prints give the artwork a more established, mounted presence.

Where acrylic wall art works best

Acrylic wall art is often a good choice for spaces with a clean interior style, simple furniture lines or a more contemporary finish. In a living room, a large acrylic print can give landscape or coastal photography a clear focal point without the weight of a frame. In a hallway, the floating profile keeps the presentation neat while adding depth to a narrow wall.

It can also work well in kitchens, dining spaces and home offices, where the wipe-clean surface and durable acrylic panel offer a practical advantage. The finish is particularly suited to photographic subjects with reflective water, dramatic skies, architectural structure, strong colour or crisp monochrome contrast.

For softer bedrooms, period homes or heavily textured interiors, a framed or canvas version of the same artwork may sometimes feel more natural. The choice depends on whether you want the print to feel sleek and defined, or quieter and more traditional.

Perspex wall prints and acrylic glass prints

Acrylic wall art is sometimes described as Perspex wall art, acrylic glass prints or acrylic photo prints. These terms are often used interchangeably, although Perspex is a brand name for a type of acrylic material.

At Fotoviva, the finish is best understood as a photographic print mounted behind acrylic rather than a direct print onto plastic. This distinction matters because the photographic print carries the image detail, while the acrylic panel adds depth, protection and a clean high-gloss surface.

The floating mount system also avoids the need for visible stand-off fixings on the front of the print. This keeps attention on the photograph itself, rather than the hardware holding it in place.
