Canvas Quality
One of the main reasons why canvases can vary in price is the quality of the printed canvas on offer. You might find as much as £30 difference between canvas printers for the same size canvas. There are various types of frames, canvas material and printers which will affect the cost of the finished canvas so if you are looking for a high quality canvas that will last for many years it's best not to go for the cheap canvases. For the best print quality you need good quality resolution images to print from, hi-grade branded inks, quality canvas material and large format printers that are calibrated correctly to ensure optimal colour range, clarity and contrast. Without these the images will print badly and you will find yourself with a sub-standard canvas.

Canvas art is mounted on wooden frames known in the trade as stretcher bars. These are made specifically for canvas frames and come in a range of sizes to suit most canvas proportions. The depth of the stretcher bars can vary – some are 18mm deep whilst others are 38mm deep. We prefer the deeper ones as it helps the canvas picture stand out on the wall better, giving a better sense of depth to the picture. Naturally the deeper frames cost a bit more. Additionally, wooden framed that are sourced responsibly from regulated forests will cost more such as FSC approved wood.

Some companies sell canvas prints on a canvas replacement material. This can be polyester material or other sub-standard media which does not look as good close-up. The best canvases are printed on 100% cotton canvas which yields the best print quality. For a better finish you should look for canvases that have a UV varnish applied after the ink has dried. This offers a slight glaze and protects the canvas from sunlight and dirt, allowing you to wipe the canvas surface with a damp cloth if necessary. Also check to see if the canvas comes with the necessary hanging kit – you don't want to have to go out and buy a canvas kit before you can put it up!

Canvas Print Run
If you are buying a piece of canvas art you may find the larger home furnishing outlets offer these at very competitive prices. This is because they are mass produced in places such as China and shipped across to the UK. Not only does this mean the canvas picture is available all over the UK, but the printing procedure may not be as good as it is over here. It also produces a nasty  carbon footprint! Buying a canvas print over here from a UK online canvas gallery will probably mean it is printed to order by highly skilled craftsmen. It is also likely to be a more limited edition piece as it is not printed in it's thousands. Exclusivity does affect the cost!

Artist's Commission
When buying a canvas print which uses an artists or photographers piece of work on you will be paying a bit more for this as (hopefully) the company selling the canvas will be paying the photographer a percentage of the profits for the sale. This is great as it helps support the artist and the money doesn't get lost in a large corporate business. Photographers who sell their work via online galleries will usually get more money back than if their image was bought by a large home furnishing store.

Delivery Charges
Always check what the cost of delivery is before you buy your canvas. Some printing stores offer free delivery of canvas and other wall prints while others will hit you for a delivery charge when you go through to the checkout. This can add to the total cost of your piece of art so be wary about this. If you are looking to get a canvas picture shipped to another country this may cost quite a bit due to the shipping charges of such large items.

These are some of the main reasons why the prices of canvas art differs so much when buying online. Choose wisely and you will have a beautiful canvas picture that will hang on your wall for many years without any trouble at all. Our Photo of the Month for May is the beautiful photograph by Lynette evans called Autumn Dreams. You may think it is not an ideal picture for the spring month of May but in our book images as good as this deserve to be displayed all year round!

Canvas art is one of the most popular forms of wall print for home owners thanks to the value for money and range of images that can be found on canvases. At Fotoviva Art Prints we are well known for our quality canvas prints and we thought it worth mentioning our panoramic prints collection and how they can best be integrated into your interior designs.

When you are decorating your home you may well come across a wall which has an unusual space to fill. Traditional canvas art is based on the normal photographic ratio so may be too deep for the area. This is where panoramic canvas art comes in. Thanks to the wide angle image ratio they can easily be hung in places where there is not much height but plenty of width – think above fireplaces, landings and over beds.

Some photographic images work better than others in the panorama format. We have a great selection of perfect images by our team of photographers which were created just for this purpose. Wide angle forest scenes, panoramic seascapes, wide landscape vistas and panorama floral prints – we have it all, and the panorama canvas selection is growing all the time.

So how are panoramic images created? There are a couple of ways our photographic team produce panoramics. Sometimes a normal photo taken will look better with a panoramic crop, cutting the top, bottom or both off the picture. This works fine but is not the best solution as the image size is then reduced. We offer large panoramic canvas prints so we need to ensure there is enough resolution in the photograph to enlarge to these sizes.

The better method is by taking several photos of the scene and merging them together using software such as Adobe Photoshop. This creates a much bigger file which can then be printed as large panorama canvases without loss of detail. We always check our picture files to ensure they will print at the largest size we offer, and usually the camera equipment our photographers use is high enough resolution even for cropping of the image.

Together with the standard large canvas panoramas, we also offer the awesome triptych canvas panoramic prints. Splitting the panoramic picture across three canvases is a great way to hang your panorama and it gives them even more impact for your walls. Most of the panoramic images will vary in height so we offer them in various width sizes, up to 60 inches wide. We can even print panoramic canvas bigger if required! You can roughly estimate the height of the panorama but if you require the specific dimensions of a particular piece please contact us before ordering.

April's Photo of the Month is the fabulous floral print by Ann Garrett called Velvet Rose.

So what makes this lovely rose picture so good? Ann has managed to capture the wonderful curves and soft detail in the folds of the deep red rose petals to great effect. By taking the photograph off-centre it has created an unusual rose image that stands out from other pictures of roses. The deep colours and petal textures help make a rose print that works exquisitely as wall art, creating a relaxed and artistic mood to any wall space.

Rose prints make wonderful gifts for Mothers or wives and have that special romantic emotion attached to them. They speak of love through their colour and natural beauty. If you are sending us your photo to be printed as canvas art, desktop photo block or as a tasty acrylic wall print, there are a few things you can do to ensure you get the best out of your picture. An understanding of your digital camera and a bit of tweaking to your photo in an image editing application will help us get the most quality from your pictures. Here are a few tips to help you achieve a great picture…

Picture Quality
Digital cameras improve every year and todays cameras will give you great results thanks to sophisticated technology and sensor size. If you are using an older digital camera it’s best to ensure you are shooting in the highest quality possible. In the camera settings menu ensure the picture quality is set to maximum. This may also be called ‘finest’ or 8mp (depending on the maximum megapixel your camera can shoot at. Not only will this mean we can print at a larger size for you, but also if you decide to crop the image it will still retain plenty of detail. If your photograph does not have enough resolution we won’t be able to print from it, especially if you are looking for a large canvas print for a wall. The larger the original photo is, the crisper the printed image will be.

Camera Scenes
Modern cameras have very clever technology that aims to take a photograph with the optimum settings for the given scene, but it doesn’t always work 100%. If you find a photo doesn’t look like it should then try one of the preset scene modes, such as landscape, portrait or party scene. These may be more suitable for the scene you are trying to shoot.

Something that can blight digital photos is the dreaded flash. It can produce washed-out faces that ruin the shot. The built-in flash of point and click cameras is not brilliant by any stretch of the imagination. If you are shooting in less than optimal light you may be able to turn the flash off to get natural looking pictures. This works particularly well if the subject is relatively still. Fast moving scenes will just blur so a flash will be needed on those.

Editing You Photo
Once you have uploaded your picture to your computer you can tweak it using free or professional image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop. Just a few small changes here and there to a picture can make a great improvement. You can also get creative and some image apps provide you with really nice built-in effects. How about making a black and white canvas print? Maybe a sepia effect wall print? The possibilities are endless so get creative!

Saving Your Images
Make sure you save your picture at the highest quality setting to retain as much information in the file as possible. JPEG files are fine for printing on canvas or acrylic as long as you save them at the highest quality. File sizes should be anywhere from 2mb upwards.
